02~“A crown of dust & blood!”

AUTHOR'S POV

Hearing his mocking ultimatum, YN’s fingers tightened around the cold silver hilt of her dagger until her knuckles turned white.

Her chest rose and fell with sharp, deliberate breaths as she turned toward the grand staircase leading down to the courtyard doors.

"Don't fall for his words, My Lady—do not go out!" the head court lady gasped, throwing her hand out to bar YN's path.

"I have to!" YN replied, her voice ringing clear as she brushed past the maid and took a resolute step toward the stairs. "If we stay trapped in this room, he will tear these walls down and slaughter every woman inside anyway. I will not die hiding like a target in a cage."

"No, My Lady, wait—this is suicide, I beg you!"

The head maid scrambled after her, drawing her own concealed blade. Behind them, the two younger maids wiped the remaining tears from their faces, raising their short-swords high with trembling hands as they fell into step beside their sovereign.

They were terrified, but the Queen's unyielding composure kept them anchored.

Below, the heavy wooden doors groaned under another violent strike from the dark army outside, iron hinges shrieking against the stone frame.

YN reached the foot of the stairs, stopping mere feet from the shuddering oak doors.

She did not hide behind her guards, nor did she flinch as the wood splintered. Instead, she adjusted the heavy, blue jeokui robes trailing over her shoulders, her stance rigid and imperial.

"Unbolt the doors," YN commanded smoothly, her gaze fixed on the entrance.

The head maid froze, her breath hitching. "My Queen..."

"Unbolt them," YN repeated, holding the silver dagger at her side, its tip pointed toward the floor. "If he wants the Moon Queen, let him see that she does not cringe before a thief in a mask."

With a final, desperate look, the head maid reached for the iron latch.

The iron-reinforced oak doors burst inward with a splintering roar, showering the grand entrance hall in a storm of gilded dust and iron shards.

Cold, midnight wind swept into the pavilion, smelling sharply of ozone, fresh snow, and the metallic tang of spilled blood.

Outside, the courtyard was a sea of black steel...a phantom army bathed in the sickening red light of the Blood Moon.

Hundreds of obsidian flags snapped like raven wings against the gale.

Beside YN, the maids drew their breath in collective terror, their short-swords trembling in their grips.

Yet YN remained motionless, anchored by the heavy, regal weight of her jeokui robes.

She stepped over the threshold, her blue silk sweeping across the snow-dusted stone like a wave of dark ocean water.

At the center of the dark legion, the masked commander sat his massive warhorse.

The black iron of his pauldrons glinted with the crimson reflection of the celestial sky. Slowly, deliberately, he dismounted. His heavy leather boots struck the cobbles with a slow, deliberate cadence—the rhythm of an impending execution.

"You step out not as a hostage, but as a sovereign," the commander murmured, his voice a low, resonant rumble that carried over the howling wind.

He stopped ten paces away, his golden eyes burning beneath the dark porcelain mask. "Or do you hold that silver blade thinking it will save you from the tide of history?"

YN tilted her chin upward, her posture unyielding beneath the iron weight of her ruby-encrusted headpiece. "A throne bought with cowardice is merely a wooden bench. If war has arrived at the Phoenix Pavilion, I will meet it standing."

The commander’s gaze lingered on her, the gold in his eyes flashing with a dark, appreciative embers.

"The throne room below burns with your fake king's desperation," he said softly, resting a gloved hand on the pommel of his obsidian blade. "Yi-won bleeds into the altar, begging ancient ghosts to validate his tyranny. But the sky does not answer beggars, My Queen."

"It answers those who take what is theirs."

Deep within the subterranean chambers, the ancient subterranean altar hummed—a primal, subterranean heartbeat awakening in response to the Blood Moon reaching its zenith.

The battle for Joseon had not merely begun; the very foundations of the realm were fracturing.

A sharp, disdainful breath escaped YN’s lips, her laughter cutting through the icy wind like shattered glass. She lowered her silver dagger just an inch, her eyes flashing with pure, royal contempt as she met the glowing golden gaze behind the dark porcelain mask.

"You speak of tides and destiny with such grandiose vanity," YN said, her voice dropping into a razor-thin edge that echoed off the damp stone walls. "Yet here you stand—creeping through side passages, striking in the dead of night like a coward afraid of the sunlight. ”

“If your claim is ordained by the heavens, why sneak into an armed palace like a thieving dog? Face me and the King's army upon an open battlefield, if you have the guts to back up your grand declarations."

For a terrifying second, the black-armored legion behind him went dead quiet, as if shocked that anyone dared speak to their commander with such venom.

Then, low and dark, a rumble vibrated through the commander's chest.

He chuckled.

It was a smooth, velvet sound, completely devoid of warmth—a predatory chuckle that sent a shiver down the spines of the maids cowering behind her.

"You wish," he murmured, his voice dipping low. "And give your desperate little King time to gather his generals? Give the court weeks to scheme and poison the wells? War is not a noble dance for your amusement, My Queen."

He tilted his head, the gold in his eyes flashing like molten metal beneath the crimson moonlight.

"I do not grant my enemies the luxury of a fair fight," he whispered, his gloved fingers flexing slowly over the hilt of his obsidian sword. "I take the board before they even realize the game has begun."

The cold wind swept across the stone balcony, snapping the heavy silk of her jeokui robes like a war banner against the bleeding sky.

YN looked down at the masked warlord.

"I do not fear a man who must hide behind iron masks and stolen shadows to claim a kingdom,"

Her voice was smooth, crystalline, and carrying through the frozen air with dangerous calm. "Fear is for those who have something to lose. I have a realm to protect."

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Every black-armored soldier and surviving court guard gasped in unison.

For a Queen to throw down a challenge of open war....without the royal seal, without the Council, and without the King’s sanction, was an act of terrifying defiance.

Yet she stood upon the high stone ledge, an embodiment of pure, imperial resolve.

"What in the hells have you done?!"

A furious roar tore through the heavy oak doors at the base of the pavilion.

King Yi-won burst onto the patio below, his formal crimson gonryongpo torn at the sleeves, his white-knuckled hand gripping a broadsword slick with fresh blood.

His face was pale and slick with sweat from the subterranean chambers, eyes bloodshot with mounting panic.

He skidded to a halt, looking wildly between the sea of black steel invading his courtyard and YN standing high above.

"Are you insane?!" Yi-won screamed up at her, his voice cracking with volcanic rage. "You dare declare a war upon my grounds?!"

YN looked at him, with her gaze icy, devoid of fear. "I had no other choice, Your Majesty," she replied, her voice carrying over the snapping flags with smooth authority.

"Now is not the time for your grandstanding!" Yi-won bellowed, pointing his broadsword toward the subterranean entrance behind him. "It is the time for the ceremony! The Blood Moon is at its peak! If I do not complete the blood seal right now, I will not remain King!"

YN’s eyes narrowed into sharp, lethal slits."Whether we bear titles or not, the safety of this kingdom and its people comes before anything—even our lives. ”

“To rule is not merely to sit upon a golden chair and receive the bows of thousands; it is to bleed for the souls who trust us as their protectors. We must fight wisely upon open ground, instead of hiding behind velvet curtains while our court burns."

“What will i do with the people when the throne and the kingdom will be no longer mine to rule? He said through his greeted teeth.

Watching him stand there...screaming, trembling, completely unbothered by the court maids weeping in the shadows or the dead guards staining the cobbles, so long as he kept his dragon seat....a bitter, cold truth crystallized in her mind.

This is who he has always been.

A selfish, lawless bastard wrapped in dragon silk, worshipping an ancient piece of wood while his people faced the blade.

She had no time to waste breath exposing him.

The realm was already burning.

"Oh, well. Great," YN said softly, her sarcasm cutting through the frost like an edge of glass. "Go complete your desperate little rituals then, your majesty. I will prepare for the war.....because as far as the heavens are concerned, I am already the chosen Queen."

She adjusted the heavy, ruby-encrusted headpiece anchoring her hair, casting one last disdainful glance at the shivering monarch. "I wish you the best of luck with your ghosts."

She turned her back on both the trembling King and the masked warlord, sweeping toward the interior doors to shed her heavy silks and take up steel.

"You will regret this, Scarlet Moon! " Yi-won roared after her, his voice trembling with humiliated rage. "You will burn for this!"

YN did not even break her stride.

"Go save your crown first, Yi-won," her voice drifted back through the freezing wind, cold and sharp as a winter blade. "Before you have no kingdom left to rule."

From the blood-soaked cobbles below, the masked commander let out a short, dark laugh....a sound that cut straight through the howling, icy gale like a blade through silk.

He didn't even bother to look up as the Queen walked away.

Instead, his golden eyes turned slowly toward Yi-won, burning with absolute, lethal contempt beneath the dark porcelain mask.

"Save your breath, Yi-won," the commander called out, his deep, iron-laced voice echoing effortlessly off the high stone walls. "The war has already been declared.”

“Go down to your dark pit. Bleed upon your ancient altar.”

“Do as many desperate little rituals as you need to save your precious crown tonight—or simply go sit on that gilded chair and ponder who you truly are. Because by the time the sun breaks over these mountains, that throne will no longer be yours."

Yi-won’s face flushed a deep, terrifying purple. Veins bulged along his neck as he slammed his iron-clad fist against the balcony railing, the heavy stone groaning beneath the impact.

"You arrogant bastard!" Yi-won screamed down at him, his voice cracking with humiliated, volcanic rage. "You march into my court like a thief in the night and declare a war with a woman in the absence of the man of the house? You coward!"

The masked commander tilted his head, resting a heavy gloved hand lazily on the pommel of his obsidian blade.

"Calling you the 'man of this house' is an insult to the phrase," the commander mocked smoothly, his velvet tone dripping with venom. "A shame, really.

“That very woman possesses a mind far more active, capable, and royal than yours could ever dream to be.” the commander continued , tilting his head mocking towards yi won. “She stands ready to bleed for her people while you stand here weeping over a wooden bench."

He nudged his warhorse half a step forward, his shadow swallowing the steps leading up to the pavilion.

"Go hide behind your throne, Yi-won," the commander whispered, the cold sharpness of his words carrying across the hushed courtyard like a death sentence. "While you still have one."

Yi-won let out a harsh, rasping laugh, wiping the cold sweat from his forehead with the back of his blood-stained sleeve. His grip on his broadsword tightened until his knuckles threatened to burst through his skin.

"You speak as though a crown is merely taken with iron and loud words, foolish traitor!" Yi-won sneered down at the commander, his voice echoing off the damp obsidian pillars of the courtyard.

"You can march a thousand men into my home, but you cannot bypass the laws of the founding spirits.”

“You cannot rule this kingdom without the Blood Seal! Go bleed into the battlefield, throw your soldiers into my fires, but remember this single truth: this throne is mine to rule!"

The masked commander did not flinch.

He did not even draw his blade.

He simply sat atop his black warhorse, watching the crumbling King with a chilling, detached calm.

A low, sinister chuckle vibrated in the commander's chest, smooth as dark velvet and cold as the frost settling over the dead.

"The Blood Moon may take years to return, Yi-won," the commander replied, his golden eyes flashing with lethal amusement behind the dark porcelain mask.

"The spirits may take their time, but I do not. ”

“I have my own ways to get whatever I want—and make no mistake, I will get it."He leaned forward slightly in his saddle, his shadow lengthening across the cobblestones until it touched the very steps Yi-won stood upon.

"Instead of worrying about ancient laws, you should spend these final moments thinking about what I will do to you once I step inside this palace," the commander whispered, his voice carrying through the frozen silence like an unholy omen.

He slowly raised his gloved hand, pointing a single, decisive finger past the trembling King, straight toward the heavy doors of the pavilion where the Queen had just vanished.

"Go run down to your dark pit and give your pathetic sacrifice in front of those carved dragons while you still breathe. Throw your soul into the altar..." The commander's tone dropped into a deadly, unyielding promise.”

"While I claim your throne... and the Queen."
